National Mutt Day

national mutt day july 2018 baymeadows animal hospitalRecognize and celebrate National Mutt Day on July 31st!  Adopt a ‘mixed breed’ from a shelter and welcome them into your heart & home.  An estimate of 80 percent of dogs that find themselves in shelters are not purebred but, these little furry babies are so ready to give love and affection to a special person.  The pet owner who chooses a mixed breed to adopt from a shelter may be saving their new barking buddy’s life.

According to Dog Tipper, ‘each year 7.6 million companion animals enter the US shelter system, where 2.7 million face their fate.’  So many dogs need a good home and it only takes one person at a time to open their hearts to care for them.

Fun Facts for National Mutt Day

  • Bo, Chip, Kelly, Stella, Topsy and Zelda, all mixed breed dogs who together took on the role of The Grinch’s sidekick Max in the big screen retelling of the Dr. Seuss classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
  • Marti, whose “Hard Knock Life” in a shelter later led to stardom as Sandy in the 2014 cinematic retelling of Annie.
  • Aleister, a former shelter dog who starred as Sorry alongside Keira Knightley and Steve  Carell in the 2012 feature film Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.

If you are looking into adopting a pet, mixed breed dogs is an option.  There are many websites which list adoptable animals from animal shelters and rescue organizations across the country, such as AdoptAPet.com, PetFinder.com.
